SUBJECT: Detaining Elementary Students After School
The Board of Education recognizes that in the best interest of students, it may be necessary to detain student(s) after regular school hours under some circumstances. The Board delegates to the District Administration the responsibility for establishing policy for detaining elementary students after school in compliance with Utah Code §53A-3-415.
II. Administrative Policy
In order to maintain open communication
cooperation between the home and school, each elementary principal
will work with faculty members, parents and students to ensure
that the parent (guardian) is contacted before a student is detained
after regular school hours.
- This policy shall apply to all elementary students (grades
kindergarten through six.)
- The parent or guardian of a student will be notified prior
to the time
when the student is detained after school. (Contact
with neighbors or
siblings is not sufficient to meet this requirement.)
- Notification will be made by a licensed employee from the
school, preferably the student's teacher.
- Notification will be documented in the school office with the
- Name of student
to be detained
- Name of
making the notification
- Name of parent (guardian)
receiving the notification
- Date and time of contact
- Reason for detaining the
- Duration of detainment time
- Verification of safe transportation
- An exception to the notification of
parent (guardian) requirement
will be made if detention is necessary for
the student's health
These policies have been developed and
approved by the Jordan School District Board of Education for exclusive
use within Jordan School District. Any use by a person or organization
outside of Jordan School District is not authorized by the school district.
Jordan School District bears no responsibility for such unauthorized
use or adaptation of the policies of Jordan School District. Any party
copying or revising these policies for its own use does so at its own
risk and responsibility as to applicability and legal sufficiency.
